Building Horizontal Hives with Dr. Leo Sharashkin

Beekeeping has been done for centuries in Europe and it can be a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. In the United States and worldwide, the primary methods used are stressful and harmful to the bees. The hive is dismantled and their living spaces can be destroyed in the process. Thankfully, there is another way!

We recently learned about the traditional Russian log hive method from our local expert, Dr. Leo Sharashkin. Leo is one of our neighbors here in the Ozarks and he has a passion for bees and is spreading the word about a method called Horizontal Hives. These are a very non-invasive and relatively harmless way to keep bees. Not only is he teaching about these simple methods, but also how to start your own hives with very little expense!

Through the efforts of O.N.E., Woodpecker Lodge, and Leo himself, we had the opportunity to build everything we need to start our own hives! Leo held a hands on workshop with all the tools and supplies to build swarm boxes and horizontal hive boxes.

To start your hives, you will need to build swarm boxes to catch local honeybees during their swarming season. Free bees that are already adapted to your area! The boxes are placed up in the trees to lure in bees. Then we began building our hive boxes which will serve as a permanent home for the bees. These hives are long and tall like a tree, very much like the logs that honeybees naturally use for their hives in the European wilderness. The hives only need  to be tended once or twice a year and they never get moved so they are very mellow compared to modern day Langstroth and Top-Bar hives.

We had lots of fun building swarm boxes and horizontal hives and we are so grateful to have Leo as our Ozarks neighbor!
